Steels Safety Training Solutions Ltd offers First Aid Courses designed to give participants the essential skills to respond effectively in emergency situations. Our courses cover fundamental techniques, ensuring that attendees gain practical knowledge and confidence in providing first aid in various settings. Suitable for individuals across all industries, our training focuses on critical areas such as CPR, wound management, and injury response, helping participants feel prepared to handle medical emergencies calmly and competently.

First Aid at Work- Level 3 Award (RQF)

Where a first aid needs assessment identifies the necessity for a first aider in the workplace, this three-day qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982. This three-day course has been designed to ensure the learner will gain the knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a wide range of workplace first aid situations. The qualification is also suitable for people with responsibility for the provision of first aid in other settings such as voluntary and community groups. The qualification is delivered, assessed, and quality assured adhering to the Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications, and delivered and assessed in accordance with the current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines.

  • The content covered in the First Aid at Work course comprises of two units. 
  • Unit 1 includes the following components:
  • 1. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider:
  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider 
  • Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Identify the need for consent to provide first aid 
  • 2. Be able to assess an emergency situation safely 
  • Conduct a scene survey 
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty 
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  •  3. Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty 
  • Identify when to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) 
  • Demonstrate adult CPR using a manikin 
  • Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position 
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position 
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure 
  • 4. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking 
  • Identify when a casualty is choking 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking 
  • 5. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding 
  • Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding 
  • Unit 2 includes the following components:
  • 1. Be able to conduct a secondary survey 
  • Identify the information to be collected when gathering a casualty history 
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a head-to-toe survey
  •  2. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints 
  • Recognise a suspected: • fracture or dislocation • sprain or strain 2.2 Identify how to administer first aid for a casualty with suspected: • fracture or dislocation • sprain or strain 
  • Demonstrate how to apply: • a support sling • an elevated sling 
  • 3. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries 
  • Recognise a suspected: • head injury • spinal injury 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for a suspected head injury 
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury 
  • 4. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for suspected: • fractured ribs • penetrating chest injury 
  • 5. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds 
  • Identify how to recognise the severity of burns and scalds 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for burns involving: • dry/wet heat • chemicals • electricity 
  • 6. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for eye injuries involving: • dust • chemicals • embedded objects 
  • 7. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected poisoning 
  • Identify how poisonous substances can enter the body 
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with suspected sudden poisoning 
  • 8. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis 
  • Recognise suspected anaphylaxis 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for a casualty with suspected anaphylaxis 
  • Demonstrate the use of a ‘training device’ adrenaline auto-injector 
  • 9. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness 
  • Recognise suspected: • heart attack • stroke • epileptic seizure • asthma attack • diabetic hypoglycaemic emergency 
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty suffering from: • heart attack • stroke • epileptic seizure • asthma attack • diabetic hypoglycaemic emergency
  • FURTHER INFORMATION
  • Throughout the course, participants engage in practical demonstrations, hands-on practice, and scenario-based training to develop their skills and confidence in providing first aid. Assessments are conducted to evaluate participants’ understanding and competence, which will include written examinations, practical assessments, and scenario-based evaluations.
  • Successful completion of the RQF Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification demonstrates that an individual has attained a higher level of first aid knowledge and skills, enabling them to fulfil the role of a designated first aider in higher-risk workplaces.

Paediatric First Aid-Level 3 Award (RQF)

This course has been developed for those who are working with children and infants. It will be of particular interest to teachers, child minders, crèche assistants, playgroup personnel and anyone else who has a responsibility for their welfare whilst in your care. The purpose of the qualification is for the learner to attain the knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations. This is a two-day qualification fulfils the requirements for first aid training detailed in the Department for Education’s statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Duration Total qualification Time (TQT) is 15 hours, with at least 12 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) in the classroom over a minimum of 2 days plus independent pre and post course study.

  • Recognise when an infant or a child is suffering from: • extreme cold • extreme heat 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for an infant or a child who is suffering from: • extreme cold • extreme heat
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who has sustained an electric shock 
  • Identify how to safely manage an incident involving electricity 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for an infant or a child who has suffered an electric shock 
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with burns and scalds 
  • Identify how to recognise the severity of burns and scalds 
  • Identify how to administer first aid for an infant or a child with burns and scalds 
  • Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected poisoning 
  • Identify how poisonous substances can enter the body

  • FURTHER INFORMATION
  • The qualification is assessed both through practical demonstration and written assessment. A learner must successfully pass both the written and practical assessments to achieve the qualification. 

First Aid at Work Annual Refresher- Level 3 Award (RQF)


Although it is not mandatory, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) strongly recommend that qualified First Aiders and Emergency First Aiders undertake an annual refresher course to keep their skills up-to-date and refreshed. This 3-hour annual refresher course has been designed to meet that requirement and will help First Aiders to maintain their skills and knowledge whilst also keeping up to date with any changes to protocols. This course is typically recommended for individuals who hold a valid first aid certification and need to renew their certification on an annual basis. The course aims to reinforce and build upon the fundamental principles and techniques of first aid, ensuring that participants stay up to date with the latest best practices and guidelines.

  • The session includes tailor made scenario-based training and practical skills where participants can apply their knowledge and skills in simulated emergency situations. This helps to reinforce their ability to respond effectively in real-life emergencies. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to practice and refine their practical skills, such as bandaging, splinting, and administering first aid treatments.

First Aid at Work Requalification Course- Level 3 Award (RQF)

This 2-day First Aid at Work course is designed for those who currently hold a First Aid at Work qualification and are due to expire and meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982. A First Aider can renew their FAW qualification by attending this 2-day requalification course without question, if it’s within 1 month past the expiry date. If the First Aider has lapsed by more than 1 month, but no longer than 3 months, then the First Aider can requalify by attending a 2-day course providing ‘Special considerations’ have been applied.

  • SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE: 
  • A signed letter from the employer to the provider of the training stating the reasons why in their opinion, the First Aider is suitably experienced to attend a 2-day course and does not require a full 3-day FAW course
  •  OR 
  • A decision is made by the provider of the training after discussions with the employer, or the First Aider, and deciding that their previous experience is sufficient to attend a 2-day course
  • If the First Aider has lapsed beyond 3 months, then they must attend a full 3-day FAW course.
  • The two-day requalification course covers all learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the three-day course but in a shortened length of time. A learner must attend a specific two-day FAW requalification course and cannot attend just two days of a three-day course
  • Successful qualification on this course is based on practical assessments conducted throughout the course and passing written test papers.

First Aid- Appointed Person Course

Where an employer’s assessment of First Aid needs identifies that a First Aider or Emergency First Aider is not necessary, the minimum requirement on an employer is to appoint a person to take charge of the First Aid arrangements, including looking after equipment and facilities, and calling the emergency services when required.
